The Sense Of Smell

I was at the sink
I was makin steam
when I breathed it in I thought about this life
hand in hot water
I thought about my bones
when I'm a ghost I can no longer do these things

chorus:
the sense of smell
is our only natural sense
that regenerates when it is damaged
the sense of life
is one that we make up
as we walk this earth and notice things

I smelled a pot
that had been in the sink
for a long long time
it smelled funny
I smelled a spoon
that I took out of the water
I don't know what food had touched it
it smelled like life

chorus

I've been doing dishes for five thousand years or so
in a past life I must have been a rag
rags get really pungent - take a whiff of one
then picture your grandma's attic and it's musty scent

sight and sound
smell touch and taste
are things we have to enjoy the life process
and when we die
we'll no longer have skin
or bones to break
and it will be much better

chorus

smell smell smell smell
